NOWATECH - Nordic Water Technology Verification Centers (NT TECH REPORT 619)

In the NOWATECH project, co-ordinated methods for environmental technology verification (ETV) have been developed and implemented at three centers, and the centers have conducted in total 10 pilot verifications. The Project has provided a significant contribution to the plans for a European Union based ETV scheme, has contributed to international mutual recognition of ETV and has produced a proposal for a Nordic ETV scheme.

Soot sensors for a healthy environment (SootSens I)

Nanosized soot particles are a serious health hazard in urban air. They can penetrate deep into the lungs and their fat solubility makes possible their accumulation in other organs such as the brain. Consequently, legislation continuously reduces allowable emission levels in diesel powered vehicles. The SootSens project has developed a new sensor based on thermophoresis that enhances soot deposition of submicron particles in diesel exhaust.

MARINORD

Who wants algae, animals and micro-organisms to “decorate” the hull of ones boat? Not the owners of recreation boats and not the large shipping companies, because it costs money! But all these actors are environmentally conscious and want to use anti-fouling paints that reduce fouling without destroying marine environment. The MARINORD project will develop such anti-fouling paints containing nano-particles filled with active substances.

Lignin as Raw Material for Chemicals (LigniMatch)

The use of lignin as raw material for the Nordic chemical industry has a large economical potential. Lignin is the second most abundant bio polymer on earth and is also processed and separated from its origin, wood, in large amount in the pulp and paper industry. This project will explore the possibilities to use various lignin structures as chemical precursor for certain chemical substances having a high potential commercial value.
